TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew testified before the US Congress on Thursday, March 23, 2023, amid growing concerns over the popular video-sharing app’s handling of user data and content moderation.
The hearing marked Chew’s first appearance before lawmakers since he took over as CEO of TikTok the last two years. Shou Zi Chew, who previously served as the CFO of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, was appointed as TikTok’s CEO in May 2021. He replaced TikTok CEO Kevin A. Mayer in March 2021.
Why was Shou Zi Chew testified?
He becomes part of media news after testifying before the US Congress regarding the legislative effort to ban TikTok in the United States. During the hearing, Chew faced tough questions from lawmakers about TikTok’s data privacy practices, content moderation policies, and ties to the Chinese government.
The app, which is owned by Beijing-based tech firm ByteDance, has faced scrutiny from US lawmakers over concerns that it could be used to collect sensitive data on American users and potentially compromise national security.
In his opening statement, Shou Zi Chew sought to assure lawmakers that TikTok was committed to protecting user data and had implemented a number of measures to address privacy concerns. He noted that TikTok had established a transparency center in the US to allow outside experts to review its data practices and had also appointed a chief privacy officer to oversee the company’s privacy and data security efforts. He said:
“We recognize that trust is the foundation of our business, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data of our users and the integrity of our platform,”
However, several lawmakers remained skeptical of TikTok’s assurances, citing concerns over the app’s ties to the Chinese government and its track record of content moderation. The app has faced criticism over its handling of sensitive topics such as politics and human rights, with some accusing the company of censorship and bias.
During the hearing, Shou Zi Chew also faced questions about TikTok’s recent ban in India, which was one of the app’s largest markets before it was removed from app stores in the country in 2020. Chew called the ban “hypothetical” and said that TikTok had not received any official communication from the Indian government regarding a potential ban.
