Wendy Robinson Obituary: Former FWCS Superintendent and Education Advocate Dies at 72

Wendy Robinson, who served as the superintendent of Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS) for 17 years and was a lifelong champion of public education, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2023. She was 72 years old.

A Trailblazer and a Leader

Robinson was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she attended FWCS from kindergarten to 12th grade. She graduated from South Side High School in 1969 and went on to study education at DePauw University. Wendy Robinson returned to Fort Wayne as a third-grade teacher at Ward Elementary School in 1973 and began her remarkable career in the district.

She held various positions in FWCS, including principal, central office administrator, assistant superintendent, and deputy superintendent. In 2003, Wendy Robinson was appointed as the superintendent of FWCS, becoming the first woman, the first African American, and the first FWCS graduate to hold the position.

As the superintendent, Robinson led the district through many challenges and achievements, such as implementing a comprehensive school improvement plan, overseeing a $500 million construction project, navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, and advocating for equitable funding and accountability for public schools. She also fostered a culture of collaboration and excellence among the staff and students of FWCS, which is the largest school district in Indiana with more than 30,000 students and 4,000 employees.

Wendy Robinson retired from FWCS in 2020, after 47 years of service to the district. She was widely respected and admired by her colleagues, peers, and community members for her dedication, vision, and leadership. She received numerous awards and honors for her work, such as the Circle of Corydon Award from the state of Indiana, the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from former Governor Mitch Daniels, and the National Superintendent of the Year finalist from AASA, The School Superintendents Association.

In 2022, FWCS renamed its Family and Community Engagement Center as the Wendy Y. Robinson Family and Community Engagement Center in recognition of her legacy and contribution to the district. The center provides various services and resources to support families and students in FWCS.

A Lifelong Advocate for Children

Wendy Robinson was not only a leader but also a mentor, a friend, and a role model for many people. She was passionate about supporting education and empowering children to reach their full potential. She believed that every staff member in FWCS had a role to play in student’s lives and that every student deserved a high-quality education regardless of their background or circumstances.

She was known for her high expectations, her integrity, her compassion, and her sense of humor. She was always willing to listen, learn, and share her wisdom with others. She cared deeply about the well-being of her staff and students and often expressed her gratitude and appreciation for their efforts.

Wendy once said in an interview with WBOI ahead of her retirement: “What is more important to me than anything else is that the kids I taught and the people I worked with respected my name.”

Wendy Robinson – A Loving Wife and Mother

Robinson was married to Charles Robinson Jr., a retired FWCS teacher and coach. They had two children: Charles Robinson III, who is a teacher at Northrop High School; and Wendy Robinson Jr., who is an attorney in Indianapolis. They also had four grandchildren: Charles IV, Camille, Carter, and Chase.

Wendy Robinson’s family was her pride and joy. She loved spending time with them and attending their activities and events. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, and watching sports.

Robinson’s family issued a statement following her passing:

We are heartbroken by the loss of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and educator. Wendy was a remarkable woman who touched countless lives with her kindness, generosity, wisdom, and grace. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
