Ashton became famous through his ex-wife Jennifer Ashton who is a very famous physician, author, and television correspondent. They have two kids together. He came into the headlines of the media after attempting suicide in 2017.
After their divorce, he ends his life on 11 February 2017 by jumping off the George Washington Bridge in New York, United States. Robert had also left a suicide note in which he had written the number of his ex-wife and also wrote to call her.

From 2012 to 2014, Robert was the Chief Medical Officer for Advance Practice Strategies (APS). In the same year, he was CMO for the MYOS corporation.
Later in July 2012, he became part of the board of directors of Cytlmmune Sciences, a nanomedicine company, and Jenrin Discovery, a medicinal chemistry research company. When he died, he worked at Cambridge Therapeutic as a chief medical director.
