What Happened to Ana Moreno? A Mother’s Tragic Death on the Eve of Prom

As a mother of three, Ana Moreno had always been supportive of her children’s dreams and aspirations. She was especially proud of her daughter Amy, who was about to attend her senior prom at a high school in Dallas, Texas. But on Saturday, May 15, 2023, Moreno’s life was cut short by a stray bullet that pierced through her car window as she was driving Amy to get her hair done and pick up her prom dress.
A Senseless Shooting
According to the Dallas Police Department, Moreno was an innocent bystander of a car-to-car shooting that occurred around 4 p.m. in a neighborhood about 10 miles southeast of downtown. Two vehicles were exchanging gunfire while driving in the area, and one of the bullets hit Moreno’s vehicle and struck her, causing her death. Three other men were also shot in the incident and were in critical condition at local hospitals as of Sunday, May 16. No arrests have been made in connection to the case.
A Devastated Family
Moreno’s family was shocked and heartbroken by the news of her death. Her youngest daughter, Michelle Rodriguez, told CNN affiliate WFAA that she learned about the tragedy from a text message sent by Amy to a family group chat. “All she heard was gunshots and she said my mom made a signal like she couldn’t breathe, and then she leaned on Amy’s shoulder and that’s when they crashed, and that’s when Amy said she called the ambulance,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez described her mother as a loving and caring person who always wanted the best for her children. “Anything you would want in a mom, that was her,” Rodriguez said. “It wasn’t her time, it wasn’t supposed to be her. And it’s over something stupid. How do you do that to someone innocent?”
Moreno’s other daughter, Amy, was looking forward to celebrating prom with her mother. Rodriguez said Moreno was excited to see Amy get ready for the special occasion. “She was like ‘Oh we finally get to see her get ready’ and she didn’t even get to see it happen,” Rodriguez said.
A Community in Mourning
Moreno’s death has also shaken the community where she lived and worked. She was a manager at a local restaurant, where she was well-liked by her co-workers and customers. Her boss, Jose Hernandez, told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that Moreno was a hardworking and loyal employee who always had a smile on her face. “She was always happy,” Hernandez said. “She never complained about anything.”
Moreno’s friends and neighbors also expressed their grief and condolences for her family. They held a candlelight vigil on Sunday night outside Moreno’s home, where they prayed and sang songs in her memory. They also set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the funeral expenses and support Moreno’s children.

Moreno’s death has also raised questions about the safety and security of the area where the shooting took place. Some residents said they have witnessed frequent gun violence and drug activity in the neighborhood, and they urged the authorities to take action to prevent more tragedies like Moreno’s.
A Mother’s Legacy
Moreno’s family said they will always remember her as a loving mother who sacrificed everything for her children. They said they will honor her legacy by staying strong and supporting each other. They also hope that justice will be served for Moreno and that her death will not be in vain.
“She didn’t deserve this,” Rodriguez said. “She deserves so much more.”
