BCCI announces India’s ODI Squad for West Indies tour

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the 16-member squad for the three-match One Day International (ODI) series against the West Indies, starting from July 27 in Barbados. The squad is led by Rohit Sharma, who will also captain the team in the two-match Test series that will follow the ODIs. Virat Kohli, who had opted out of the limited-overs leg of the tour due to personal reasons, has been named in the ODI squad as a batsman.
The ODI squad features some new faces and some familiar ones. Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad, who impressed in the recent Test series against England, have been rewarded with ODI call-ups. Suryakumar Yadav, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka earlier this year, has retained his place in the middle order. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, who are both wicket-keeper batsmen, have also been included in the squad.
The all-rounder department is led by Hardik Pandya, who has been named as the vice-captain of the team. He will be assisted by Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, who are both spin-bowling all-rounders. Shardul Thakur, who has been a consistent performer for India across formats, is also part of the squad.
The spin attack comprises of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who have not played together for India since 2019. They will be hoping to revive their partnership and regain their form in the Caribbean. The pace attack is spearheaded by Jaydev Unadkat, who has been recalled to the ODI squad after four years. He will be joined by Mohammad Siraj, Umran Malik and Mukesh Kumar, who are all uncapped at this level.

The ODI series will be a good opportunity for India to test their bench strength and prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. The West Indies, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing performance in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa.
