Ray Stevenson, a British actor who starred in several blockbuster films and TV shows, passed away on Sunday at the age of 58. His publicist confirmed his death to various media outlets, but did not reveal the cause of his demise.

Stevenson was best known for his roles as Volstagg in the “Thor” franchise, Frank Castle in “Punisher: War Zone”, Marcus Eaton in the “Divergent” series, and Governor Scott Buxton in the Oscar-winning Indian epic “RRR”. He also lent his voice to Gar Saxon, a Mandalorian warrior, in the animated series “Star Wars Rebels” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”.

A versatile and talented performer

Stevenson began his acting career in the early 1990s, appearing in various British TV shows and films. He gained recognition for his portrayal of Titus Pullo, a Roman soldier, in the HBO series “Rome”, which ran from 2005 to 2007. He then transitioned to Hollywood, landing roles in action, fantasy and sci-fi films.

He was praised for his performance as Volstagg, one of Thor’s loyal friends and warriors, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He appeared in all three “Thor” films, as well as a cameo in “Avengers: Endgame”. He also played Frank Castle, a vigilante who seeks revenge for his family’s murder, in the 2008 film “Punisher: War Zone”, based on the Marvel Comics character.

Stevenson also ventured into other genres, such as drama and comedy. He played Marcus Eaton, the leader of the Abnegation faction and the father of the protagonist Tris, in the “Divergent” film series, based on the dystopian novels by Veronica Roth. He also starred as Firefly, a mercenary and explosives expert, in the 2013 film “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”, based on the toy line and comic book series.

One of his most recent and acclaimed roles was as Governor Scott Buxton, the ruthless and oppressive British ruler of Delhi during the Indian independence movement, in the 2022 film “RRR”. The film, directed by S.S. Rajamouli, was a massive success both critically and commercially, winning four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film. Stevenson’s performance was widely praised for its intensity and authenticity.

A Star Wars fan and a beloved colleague

Stevenson was also a fan of Star Wars and was thrilled to be part of its universe. He voiced Gar Saxon, a Mandalorian super commando who served under Darth Maul and later the Empire, in two animated series set in the Star Wars galaxy. He was also cast as Baylan Skoll, a mysterious character who would cross paths with Ahsoka Tano, a former Jedi and fan-favorite character, in the upcoming live-action series “Ahsoka”, which is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in August.

Stevenson attended the Star Wars Celebration event last month in London and spoke about his excitement at being part of the project. He said that getting to wield a lightsaber was “just the best feeling in the world” and that he was honored to work with Rosario Dawson, who plays Ahsoka Tano.

Stevenson’s colleagues and friends expressed their shock and sadness at his sudden death. S.S. Rajamouli, the director of “RRR”, tweeted that he was “heartbroken” by the news and that Stevenson was “a wonderful person and a brilliant actor”. Jr NTR and Ram Charan, the lead actors of “RRR”, also paid tribute to Stevenson on social media, calling him “a legend” and “a gem of a person”. James Gunn, who directed Stevenson in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, wrote that he was “devastated” by Stevenson’s passing and that he was “one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met”.

Stevenson is survived by his wife Elisabetta Caraccia and their two sons Sebastiano and Leonardo.
