Who is James Pritchard? The 17-Year-Old Accused of Shooting Four Students on Valentine’s Day

James Pritchard, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – On February 14, 2023, a shooting near Westinghouse Academy in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood left four students injured and two suspects arrested. One of the suspects is James Pritchard, a 17-year-old resident of Clairton, who is being charged as an adult with multiple counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, and firearms possession by a minor. But who is James and what led him to allegedly open fire on his fellow students?

Background and Motive

According to a criminal complaint filed in the case, Pritchard was a former student at Westinghouse Academy who had been expelled for fighting and bringing a weapon to school. He had also been involved in several altercations with other students from the school, some of whom were affiliated with a rival gang. The complaint states that Pritchard had posted several messages on social media threatening to shoot up the school and kill specific individuals.

On the day of the shooting, James Pritchard and another 14-year-old suspect, who has not been identified, drove to the area near the school in a stolen car. They waited for the school to dismiss students and then approached a group of four students on North Murtland Street. Pritchard allegedly fired at least 13 shots from a 9mm handgun, hitting three of the students in the hand, arm, and ankle. The fourth student was shot in the thigh by a bullet that ricocheted off a car. The suspects then fled the scene in the stolen car.

The victims were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. They were later identified as Hinkley High School students, aged 15 to 18. One of them told police that he recognized Pritchard as the shooter and that he had been involved in a previous fight with him.

James Pritchard Arrest and Charges

The police were able to track down the suspects with the help of witnesses, surveillance footage, and social media posts. They found the stolen car abandoned on Frankstown Avenue and recovered the handgun used in the shooting. They also obtained a search warrant for Pritchard’s home and seized his cell phone, which contained incriminating messages and photos.

Pritchard was arrested on March 18, 2023, along with the 14-year-old suspect, who is being charged as a juvenile. They were both arraigned before District Judge Oscar Petite Jr. and denied bail. They are currently being held at the Allegheny County Jail.

James Pritchard is facing eight counts of aggravated assault, five counts of recklessly endangering another person, four counts of attempted homicide, and one count each of criminal conspiracy to commit homicide and firearms possession by a minor. He is being represented by attorney Casey White, who said that he and his client were satisfied with prosecutors dropping four of the most serious charges during a preliminary hearing on October 18, 2023.

White also said that James is maintaining his innocence and that he hopes to have the case moved to juvenile court. He argued that Pritchard was influenced by peer pressure and trauma from his upbringing in a violent neighborhood. He also said that Pritchard suffers from mental health issues and needs treatment rather than incarceration.

Public Reaction and Implications

The shooting at Westinghouse Academy shocked and outraged the community, especially since it happened on Valentine’s Day, a day of love and celebration. Many students, parents, teachers, and residents held vigils, rallies, and marches to condemn the violence and call for peace. They also expressed their support for the victims and their families.

The shooting also raised questions about school safety, gun control, gang violence, and juvenile justice. Some people criticized the school district for not doing enough to prevent such incidents or to provide adequate security and counseling for students. Others blamed the easy access to guns and the lack of background checks for minors. Still, others pointed out the root causes of gang violence and the need for more intervention programs and opportunities for at-risk youth.

The case of James Pritchard is one of many examples of how gun violence affects young lives in America. It also shows how complex and challenging it is to address this issue from legal, social, and psychological perspectives. As the trial progresses, more details will emerge about what motivated Pritchard to allegedly commit such a heinous act and what consequences he will face for his actions.
