Tailei Qi – On August 28, 2023, at around 1 p.m., a shooting occurred in Caudill Laboratories, a science building on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill). According to WRAL-TV, the shooter was identified as Tailei Qi, a doctoral student in chemistry who worked in the same lab as his victim, Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the department of chemistry.
The Shooting
The UNC-Chapel Hill chancellor, Kevin Guskiewicz, issued a statement saying that the campus police were notified of shots fired in Caudill Laboratories at 1:02 p.m. and arrived at the scene within two minutes. They found Yan with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene. They also located Qi inside the building and took him into custody without incident.
The campus was placed on lockdown for about an hour as authorities searched for any other potential threats or victims. No other injuries were reported and the lockdown was lifted by 2:15 p.m. The chancellor said that there was no evidence of any ongoing danger to the campus community.

Tailei Qi: A Promising but Troubled Student
Tailei Qi was born in Wuhan, China, in 1997. He graduated from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He then joined the doctoral program at UNC-CH in 2021, where he became a member of Yan’s research group on nanophotonics and plasmonics. The next day, Tailei Qi brought a handgun to the Caudill Laboratories on campus, where Yan’s research group was located. He shot Yan multiple times in his office, killing him instantly. He then fled the scene and shot another person in the parking lot before being apprehended by the police.
The Motive
The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, but some sources have suggested that Qi was unhappy with Yan’s supervision and academic performance. According to Sportskeeda, Qi was a research student from Wuhan, China, who joined UNC-Chapel Hill in 2019. He was working on a project related to solar cells under Yan’s guidance.
