Elijah-Jay Mariano Death Cause: Windsor High School Mourns the Death of Football Player 

Elijah-Jay Mariano, a sophomore football player at Windsor High School, died on Tuesday after collapsing during a practice drill, according to school officials and his family.

Mariano, who was 15 years old and played wide receiver and defensive back for the Warriors, lost consciousness around 4 p.m. while doing a non-contact drill with his teammates, said Terrell Hill, the superintendent of Windsor Public Schools.

The coaching staff immediately provided first aid and called 911, Hill said. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and performed CPR on Mariano, who was then transported to Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of Mariano’s death was not immediately known. Hill said the school district was cooperating with the police and the medical examiner’s office to determine what happened.

“We are devastated by this tragic loss,” Hill said in a statement. “Elijah-Jay was a wonderful young man who had a bright future ahead of him. He was a beloved member of our school community and our football family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Mariano’s family described him as a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend who had a passion for football and music. He also enjoyed playing video games, fishing, and spending time with his dog, Luna.

“Elijah-Jay Mariano was always smiling and making people laugh,” his mother, Jessica Rivera, said in an interview. “He had such a big heart and he cared so much for others. He was my baby boy and I’m going to miss him so much.”

Rivera said her son had no known health issues and had passed a physical exam before the football season. She said he had been playing football since he was 7 years old and dreamed of playing in college and beyond.

“He loved football more than anything,” she said. “He worked so hard to be the best he could be. He wanted to make us proud and he did.”

Rivera said she was grateful for the support she had received from the school district, the football team and the community. She said she hoped her son’s death would raise awareness about the importance of health screenings for young athletes.

“I don’t want any other parent to go through what I’m going through,” she said. “I want people to know that this can happen to anyone. Please check on your kids and make sure they are OK.”

A Vigil for Mariano Draws Hundreds of Mourners

On Tuesday night, hundreds of people gathered at Windsor High School for a candlelight vigil to honor Mariano’s memory and show solidarity with his family.

The crowd included students, teachers, coaches, administrators, parents, relatives, friends, and members of other local football teams. Many wore purple shirts or ribbons — Elijah-Jay Mariano’s favorite color — or jerseys with his number 11.

Some held signs that read “EJ Strong” or “Fly High EJ.” Others brought flowers, balloons, stuffed animals or photos to place on a makeshift memorial near the football field.

The vigil featured prayers, songs, poems, and speeches by Mariano’s family members, teammates, and coaches. They shared stories of his achievements, his personality, and his impact on their lives.

“He was more than just a football player,” said Rob Fleeting, the head coach of the Windsor Warriors. “He was a leader, a role model, a friend. He was someone who always gave his best effort, always showed respect, always had a positive attitude. He was someone who made us better as a team and as people.”

Fleeting said Mariano had been improving as a player and had earned a starting spot on both offense and defense this season. He said Mariano had also been excelling academically and had aspirations to attend college.

“He had so much potential,” Fleeting said. “He had so much to offer to the world. He was taken from us too soon.”

Fleeting said he hoped Mariano’s legacy would inspire others to follow his example of hard work, kindness, and joy.

“He touched so many lives in such a short time,” Fleeting said. “He left us with so many memories that we will cherish forever. He will always be in our hearts.”
