Early Life and Transition

This talented personality was originally from Spain. She was born in 1961 and her date of birth was April 09. However, she moved to New York in the late 1970s with her family in order to start a better lifestyle. At the age of 16, she realized her true gender and began medically transitioning. At that time, Carmen was living in Washington, D.C. 

She told TransGriot in 2013 that her father always knew she was effeminate and supported her decision to transition. After a few years, this activist moved back to Spain and worked in the fashion and nightlife industries. But later she again moved back to the U.S.

Joining the House of Xtravaganza

In 1985, Carmen joined the House of Xtravaganza, one of the first Latinx houses in the ballroom scene. The house was founded by Hector Valle, who became Hector Xtravaganza, the “grandfather” of the house. The house members adopted the surname Xtravaganza to signify their bond as a chosen family. Carmen became one of the most prominent and beautiful members of the house, known for her elegance and grace on the runway. She competed in various categories, such as face, body, evening wear, and realness.

Covering the Village Voice and Appearing in Paris Is Burning

In 1988, Carmen achieved a milestone when she graced the cover of the Village Voice for a story titled “Venus Envy: The Drag Balls of Harlem” by Michael Musto. The article brought mainstream attention to the ballroom culture and its participants, who faced discrimination and violence for their gender expression and sexual orientation. Carmen’s stunning photo on the cover captured her essence as an “impossible beauty” who defied societal norms.

Two years later, Carmen appeared in Paris Is Burning, a documentary by Jennie Livingston that chronicled the lives and struggles of several ballroom performers. In September 2022, Carmen revealed that she had stage 4 lung cancer. Her friend Mink Xtravaganza started a GoFundMe campaign to support her during her chemotherapy treatment. The campaign raised over $20,000 from hundreds of donors who expressed their love and gratitude for Carmen.

On August 5, 2023, Carmen passed away peacefully at her home in New York. Her death was announced by the House of Xtravaganza on Instagram. The post said,
