Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Statement will be Recorded by a Colombo Court

Colombo, November 15, 2022 – In Sri Lanka Colombo court has issued an order to record a statement from former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the 18 million Sri Lankan rupees or more than 49,000 US dollars that were found by anti-government protesters at the president’s house and fought during the mass protests in July.

Several anti-government protesters stormed the President’s official residence in fought the protesters found $49,000 in cash, the President’s official residence there after the cash was counted and handed over to officers of the Ford police station by protesters.

However, the Colombo fought magistrate today issued an order to the police to record a statement from the former president in this regard. The magistrate also instructed the police to conduct an investigation.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka began due to multiple compounding factors like tax cuts, money creation, a nationwide policy to shift to organic or biological farming, the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings, and of course the pandemic.

The subsequent economic hardships resulted in the 2022 Sri Lankan protests in June this year, the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, has said in a statement that the economy had collapsed leaving it unable to pay for essentials in September United Nations report said that the economic crisis is a result of the official’s impunity for human rights abuses and economic crimes.

Now, this is interesting largely because the former president has stayed away from the news for the past few months after fleeing the country in July. It will be interesting to see what information will come to light regarding this sum of money that was found at the President’s official residence.
