How Chicago Landlord Joseph Czuba Stabs Muslim Mother and Son in Hate Crime Over Israel-Palestine Conflict
Joseph Czuba, Chicago, Illinois – A horrific crime has shocked the nation and sparked outrage among the Muslim community. A Chicago man has been accused of stabbing a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy and his mother in a hate-motivated attack over the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The tragic incident
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 14, 2023, in Plainfield Township, a suburb of Chicago. The victims, Wadea Al-Fayoume and his mother Hanan Shaheen, were tenants of Joseph Czuba, a 71-year-old landlord who lived in the same house.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Department, Czuba attacked the mother and son with a knife around 11:38 a.m., after making anti-Muslim statements. Shaheen managed to call 911 and told the dispatchers that her landlord was trying to kill her and her son.
When the police arrived, they found Shaheen and Al-Fayoume with multiple stab wounds. Al-Fayoume had been stabbed 26 times and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Shaheen was in serious condition and underwent surgery.
Czuba was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, two counts of a hate crime, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Joseph Czuba: The motive behind the attack
The sheriff’s department said that Joseph Czuba targeted the victims because they were Muslim and he was upset about the ongoing Middle East conflict involving Hamas and Israel.
The conflict escalated in May 2023, when Hamas fired rockets at Israel after weeks of tension over Jerusalem. Israel responded with airstrikes and ground operations that killed more than 250 Palestinians, including many children. The violence also claimed the lives of 13 Israelis.

The Palestinian American Community Center (PACC) also issued a statement expressing its sorrow and anger over the attack. It said that Al-Fayoume was “the latest victim of a long history of violence against Palestinians” and demanded accountability for his killer.

The legal process
Joseph Czuba appeared in court on Monday for a bond hearing. He was denied bail by Judge David Carlson, who said that he posed a danger to society and had no regard for human life.
